Regarding the combined impact of these programs, OH residents who were more involved in AA and NA had the highest rates of abstinence at 24 months (87.5%). Furthermore, the lowest rates of abstinence were reported among usual care participants with low 12-step involvement (21.2%). While abstinence rates did not differ significantly between conditions, among high 12-step attendees, OH residents had a major advantage over usual care participants. A combination of these two mutual-help programs might have produced the best outcomes for OH residents because of the joint emphasis on positive social support, strict rules, abstinent living, and self-direction. These two programs offered adults in recovery settings to develop a strong sense of community with similar others who share common abstinence goals . Receiving support for abstinence, guidance, and information from others committed to maintaining long-term recovery may enable addicts to avoid relapse. The Sober Home organization encourages 12-step participation (Oxford House Inc., 2002), and most residents are involved in AA or NA (Flynn, Alvarez, Jason, Olson, Ferrari, & Davis, 2002; Nealon-Woods, Ferrari, & Jason, 1995).

Since many residents either don’t own cars or have suspended licenses, access to public transportation crucial. All residents must work or be enrolled as full-time students. And, in addition to being self-run, houses are self-supporting. Any initial grants or loans used to secure a location are paid off collectively by the residents. Oxford Houses of North Carolina, established in 1991, is a statewide network of recovery residences, chartered by Oxford House, Inc., the 501 umbrella corporation. Oxford Houses are peer-driven, democratically run, and self-supported group residences for individuals in recovery from a substance use disorder. Currently, the network of Oxford Houses is over 3,300 in the United States. I’ve just finished the Business English course with Oxford TEFL. I was so uncertain before I started having had previous experience and not knowing if I would get what I wanted from the course. However, the course totally exceeded my expectations in terms of content, usability and my fantastic tutor Charlotte, who was supportive, helpful and patient. The efficiency and professionalism of the communication in general was fantastic both with Charlotte and Fran.

The community is located along the eastern shore of Oxford Lake at the mouth of Hayes River, 950 kilometres north of Winnipeg. The Hayes River was designated a Canadian Heritage River in 2006. Each Oxford House is autonomous except in matters affecting other houses or Oxford House, Inc., as a whole. No member of an Oxford House is asked to leave without cause following the 30-day probationary period—a dismissal vote by the membership because of drinking, drug use, or disruptive behavior. Individuals who are interested in living in an Oxford House should call the house of their choice to see if there are any vacancies, If there are vacancies, an interview will be scheduled. The interview with an applicant involves all members of a house. Eighty percent of the house members must vote to accept the applicant as a roommate. The school is able to claim a contribution to fees for all eligible children from Essex County Council in accordance with their Early Years Development Plan. Oxford House has as its primary goal the provision of housing and rehabilitative support for the alcoholic and drug addict who wants to stop drinking or using drugs and stay stopped. Any recovering alcoholic or drug addict can apply to get into any Oxford House by following a few simple steps. Mainly filling out an application and being interviewed by the existing members of the House. Individuals living in a house are expected to participate in a recovery program in the community during their residence. The first North Carolina Oxford Houses were established in Durham and Asheville, NC. As of March 2022, there are 287 houses in North Carolina, with locations statewide.
